A driver from Brighton has been accused of a DUI and reckless driving after hitting a student from the University of Colorado. According to the Jan. 17 report, the student, a 20-year-old, had part of his scalp torn off in the crash and suffered serious injuries. The crash involved three vehicles in Boulder on a late Friday night.
The 28-year-old man accused of driving drunk also faces charges including vehicular assault and reckless driving. It’s believed that he ran a red light at Foothills Parkway at around 11:56 p.m., and collided with two vehicles before landing on the median. The police reported that he was attempting to get his vehicle off the median when they arrived at the scene.
The 28-year-old man claims he had only two Manhattans to drink that night, but officers claimed he was slurring his speech and smelled of alcohol. He failed roadside sobriety tests when they were performed.
The crash resulted in the 20-year-old driver of another vehicle being rushed to Boulder Community Health’s Foothill Hospital for treatment. As a result of his injuries, he allegedly does not remember the crash at all.
The other driver involved in the crash did not suffer injuries, fortunately. So far, there’s no word on if the student will be able to return to school.
This kind of crash is completely avoidable, which makes it tragic for those involved. Although the driver accused of driving while intoxicated has no previous criminal history in Colorado, it was still a bad decision to drive in an unsafe state.
