How can I avoid accidents this Halloween?

On Behalf of | Oct 27, 2017 | motor vehicle accidents

Kids running around at night, with masks on their faces making it hard for them to see, is never a good idea — but that’s what happens on Halloween. Drivers generally know to watch out for kids on Halloween and they will be on high alert, but how do you make sure your kids stay extra safe?

Here are a few tips to keep your kids safe on Halloween:

  • Makes sure that children under 12 years of age trick or treat with adults present. However, you may want to decide on a case-by-case basis whether your kids are ready to trick or treat alone.
  • Teach your kids to keep their eyes on the road and traffic, and to put their cellphones away.
  • Choose costumes with bright and highly visible colors, or equip your kids with reflective tape on their candy bags and outfits.
  • Give your kids glow sticks that will make them more visible.
  • Only visit known houses when trick or treating, and only trick or treat in well-lit communities that have bike paths and sidewalks.
  • Drive slowly and turn on your headlights when operating your vehicle on Halloween.
  • Check all candy for any signs of tampering. It’s rare, but scary things have happened where people put dangerous substances or materials in candy.

Halloween is almost here and if you follow the above advice, it will help you make sure to have the most fun time possible without accidents. However, if a Halloween accident happens, you may want to investigate whether the facts surrounding the event will support your child to pursue personal injury damages to pay for medical care.
